Is adding linseed oil could make mars black paint suitable for overpainting?
I was googling for the blackest oil paint & i came across with mars black. but some say it dries faster thus best for underpainting only. what if i wanted to paint over what i previously painted with ivory black? can linseed make mars black fatter?
First of all you need to know that pure Linseed(flax)oil comes refined or boiled which means a drier like cobalt drier is added. Both will make your paint shinier and stronger but the refined will dry slower. I have read that some great artists used walnut oil in place of linseed.
It's pretty standard practice to use oil as a type of thinner or glaze vehicle in oil painting. You can add oil and keep the viscosity and thin the color. Varnish does the same thing but better because it dries faster. If you want to speed up drying you can add cobalt drier but be careful because it's very unhealthy if used in ignorance.
