How Can I tell if this is student or artist quality?
So a while ago i bought paint and was really just shopping from the bottom of the barrel of what I saw they had there, each tube was around 6-10$ or something. Anyway, i can't tell if this is student quality or artist quality (I'm judging by the low price it's student quality)
Color: Cadmium Red Hue
Brand : Utrecht
Other: Artists' Colors Acrylic Series 2
Heavy Body
It has an 11 lightfastness, semi transparent, acrylic polymer emulsion vehicle and the pigment is naphthol and Arylide Yellow
Also, how can I tell if this paint is toxic? I'm thinking because it's a hue that it's not toxic in the slightest but there's no health warning label on it.
Utrecht is Utrecht. Meaning it is neither the best (like Golden or M. Graham) nor the poorest quality on the market (like Winsor & Newton's Galeria or Duro). Utrecht is about in the middle along with Daler-Rowney's Cryla brand and Liquitex's Heavy Body paints and Blick's Art Store brand.
Are their paints student quality or artist quality? To me that's personally a toss-up. But then again, no artist I know uses them, so maybe they are. The only thing I ever buy from the Utrecht store on Santa Monica is their stretcher bars, which are a lot cheaper than Blick's from down the street.
And Utrecht's Cadmium Red Hue is not a true cadmium. The name is misleading because 'Hue' means 'resembling the color/effects of.'
Are their cadmium acrylic paints toxic? Not according to the safety restrictions placed on their paints sold in the state of California as long as they are used as intended.. If you don't smoke it or drink it or shoot up with it there aren't any real health concerns.
EDIT: I did not say the Utrecht paint you have is or is not student grade or quality paint. I said I didn't know and don't know any fellow artists who use it. But you did not say whether it was their so-called Studio Series or so-called Professional Series paints. I would hope the 'Professional' grade was a better quality paint and would have to think the 'Studio' grade was their student level paint.
EDIT: Despite what some art store clerk claims, I am now holding in my hand a 4oz. jar of M. Graham's 'Hooker's Green.' I turn it around to see on the back of the label the confirmation ASTM seal. Same thing with my 4oz. jar of 'Quinacridone Rose'.
By the way, the remarkable thing about M. Graham acrylic paints is that they are, like Golden, pure paint. Unlike most of the other makers of acrylic artists paint who add filler ingredients to save money neither Golden or M. Graham do this. I would probably use M. Graham as often as Golden but not enough local art stores carry the brand.
