What seven watercolor colors would you suggest I get to start out in watercolors and what brand?

I need the basics but I don't want just boring basic primary colors. Water colors have such different hues of the same color. I don't want to buy cheap water colors either but I can't afford the most expensive either, and want to make sure they are high pigment. I was looking at Cotman and the Dick Blick brands. Are these good paints? I have read some reviews online at store that sell them but I would love it if an experienced watercolorists could give me an opinion before I waste my money. Thank you for any help you may offer. ......I also have some Canson Watercolor paper (Montval Aquarelle) which says it is cold pressed and student quality....when I get better any suggestions on professional quality paper?
You were not kidding the brushes are expensive, lol I looked at the prices and one of them was $200.00!

Michaels has absolutely NO idea what good watercolor paper is. Watercolor paper has a right side and a wrong side to paint on. The right side is the side where you can read the watermark on the paper. Invariably Michaels puts their stickers on the right side, leaving glue on the painting surface.

I get my paint and supplies from two online art houses,
Daniel Smith Art Supplies

http://www.danielsmith.com/

and Cheap Joe's Art Stuff

http://www.cheapjoes.com/

The paper I like to use is Fabriano Extra White Soft Pressed. It has a velvety tooth to the paper. You can tear the paper into smaller sheets rather than using the whole 22x30 sheet. Both Cheap Joe's and Daniel Smith carry it. Both of them also carry their own brand of watercolors. Don't get student grade paints. They don't have as much pigment in them and they don't flow nicely. You won't be happy with them.
For a limited palette you want to start with the primary colors. From these you can mix a plethora of other colors.
These colors are for a novice palette from the book 'Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Watercolor' by Marian Appellof. It is the book I had to get for my Beginning Watercolor class. It has everything in it.
It has a great section on mixing colors. I use it all the time.
You will want to start out with a cool and a warm in red, blue and yellow.
Winsor Yellow (cool) and Cadmium Yellow (warm), Alizarin Crimson (cool red) and Cadmium red (warm), Cerulean Blue (cool) and Ultramarine Blue (warm).
you can also add a Burnt Sienna (brown) and a Viridian green to your palette.
Cotman is expensive for small tubes of paint. I don't have experience with Dick Blick.
I like Daniel Smith's assortment of specialty colors, like the Duochrome colors and their Primatek. But they only come in 15 ml tubes. If I am replacing a basic color like Viridian, I go with the 37 ml tubes from Cheap Joe's American Journey line. Neither of them are cheap, but they are not as expensive as you would think. And their quality is great.

One last thing - Don't skimp on your brushes. Cheap brushes shed and break down very quickly. Spend a little more and your brushes will last years with proper care. I have a mix of squirrel, and a few sable. I haven't been able to afford Kolinsky though. Those are really expensive, but they are the cadillac of brush hair. Get yourself a #12 round, a #2 round, a 1" flat and a 1/4" flat, a good wash brush - either a mop style or a flat wash and a nice filbert brush. These should get you started.
Have fun
