Best acrylic paint brand, and brushes?
Can anyone tell me what the best brand of acrylics are? At the moment I use Galeria acrylics, partly because I really like them, but mainly because I can afford them. Are there any other brands of acrylic which are as cheap as galeria but better?
Also, I'm yet to find a brand of brushes for acrylic which I like, does anyone know of good (quite cheap) brushes?
You really can't get "good" and "cheap" in the same art material. The less expensive paints use less of the best quality pigments, or use synthtic pigments, in each tube. You get what you pay for in art materials.
The "student grade" paint is the lower quality paint. The better grades of paint are called, "Artist grade, or Professional grade" paint. You must decide whether you want to paint for fun, or for a profession. If you want to paint for a hobby, or family gifts, use the cheap stuff. That it is unsatisfactory in quality, fades, is harder to use, has color that is inaccurate and doesn't mix well, doesn't matter because you are not trying to create work to last for true art patrons and many years into the future.
But if you do want to become a professional artist you need to take the qualty issues seriously -you own this to your patrons, and yourself.
A third choice is that you want to practice with the student grade materials, then work your way up to the professional level. Then work on your technical skills with the cheap stuff. When you are good, begin replacing each color you run out of with the quality paints. A good start is Liquitex or Golden acrylics. Another good choice is the new Windsr & Newton paint: Finity -it makes your work much easier. The "Gallery" line of paints is a student grade.
As for brushes I usually choose the middle to low-expensive brushes. If you want to work smoothly, use red sable for most of your work, and squirrel hair for you mop brushes. If you like to work thickly -impasto- use the stiff brushes for oil and acrylic, or oil only brushes. Another choice for impasto painting is palette knives. Use only the metal paletter knives -the plastic will make you nuts to work with because they bend when they should be stiff. All brands make several lines of brushes from cheapest to most expensive. The most expensive will make you happier when you begin to use the best quality paints.
