Why is painting so hard for me?
Hi I wanted to ask what's wrong with my techniques in painting...I'm a beginner when it comes to painting but I've been drawing all my life.
I'm decent when it comes to drawing with pens/pencils/crayons/markers and those type of "stick" mediums. I like to use lots of colour and have contrasted images (I apply more pressure than most when it comes to colouring with pencil crayons to get a rich colour and I like to blend colours too) but when I paint, everything turns out very bad, chunky, too much paint and I often lose motivation half way through.
I am working with acrylics
1) Paint a wash. I paint this so it is opaque
2) Draw a rough sketch with pencil
3) Paint in layers of details (also opaque)
but everything looks chunky
am i using too much paint? or should I paint the background last so it doesn't look too chunky?
Thanks!
First off: Avoid the pencil. Graphite can get into the paint and cause the paints to get muddy or discolored. Do your sketches in paint. Use a pale color and roughly put in the objects. This works really well with oils, but can work for acrylics too.
Speaking of oils: Have you tried them? You may like them. You can work chunky and it looks great. Its slower drying time allows you to blend. You'd have to wait alot longer between your layers (but you can always work on a few at once).
But, if you still want acrylics (and they can be perfect for some folks) let's think of a few things to check on (a picture of your works would help!):
1. You may be using too much paint. But, if you are working in washes and layers, this is doubtful. Perhaps thinner layers may be in order.
2.Or perhaps, you need to just avoid the layers all together. Once you have your image in, the great thing about scrylics is that they dry fast. Paint in the back ground and wait a little bit and your good for the mid ground. If you are using opaque, you don't really need layers. lay down the paint and only the paint.
3.Or, look into smei-transparent paints? This way, your paints look less chunky and lower layers of paint can peek through to make deeper and more complex colors.
4. It could be your subjects. Certain images may come across chunkier with your painting style. For example, people's face's have alot of precise details, where as a landscape can be beautiful even with thicker paints. You can even blend colors on the canvas and build up depth this way. Think Dali vs Monet.
5. Are you blending your colors on the canvas or the pallet? Try the pallet. This way you can put down less paint for the precise color you are looking for.
Bon chance.
