French press and bitter coffee?
I've just started making my own coffee at home. I've been using a couple different kinds of Safeway brand coffee beans in a French press and they both taste kind of bitter. Do I need higher quality coffee or am I using the press wrong? (I've been letting 2 1/2 scoops of ground coffee brew in 12 ounces of hot water for 4 minutes before I press it)
Not knowing how big you scoop is that is a hard one to really say but I would guess you are using to much coffee.
Second you need to upgrade your coffee. Store brands, even the premium are usually better bad.
Look for 100% Arabica coffee bean. It is very low acid and works very well in a French Press. Also the grind should be a little coarser than regular drip coffee.
I live in Kona Hawaii, we grow some of the best coffee in the world. So if you want a real treat get 100% Kona coffee. It will be pricey but in the same range as Starbucks... and momma always said if I can't say something nice don't say it ... so I won't talk about $tarbucks.
