When Did Long Range Shooting Become Unsporting?
For those of us that shoot more rounds breaking a barrel in than most hunters shoot in 10yrs. How about all the money and time we spend? Developing accuracy loads for each of our rifles. Knowing which rifle has to have a fouling shot to be dead on when we shoot round number two. Know your trigger so well when you get on target your finger tightens as you steady on the kill zone it tightens again. To the point that the next fraction of an ounce of pressure will send a bullet down range. If any of you know what I'm talking about. Do you feel unethical about taking that shot. The one you've practiced for sometimes for a few years. Before it presents it's self.
The "ethical" shot is the one you have very good reason to believe will give the animal a humane death, without endangering any other animal, person, or property. How far is such an ethical shot? It depends on many factors, as you have pointed out, factors like the shooter's skill, the accuracy of the firearm in combination with the specific ammunition, the shooter's familiarity with that particular firearm, weather conditions, etc.
I think what makes some people skeptical about the ethics of long shots is that so few people are really skilled enough for them, or good at knowing when conditions other than their own skills make them a bad idea. Too many people kid themselves, saying, "Oh, I can probably make that. It's worth a try!" It gives a bad name to the few really ethical long-range shooters.
