How to protect water color painting on mirror?
I did a water color painting on a mirror. How can I protect the colors from running from moisture? Is there a fixative I should use? Thanks! (No art shops in town, so I can't just go ask)
I already did the painting. The paints are in little tubes, not sure what type they are. The color is fine. I'm just looking for something to spray over the painting so the colors won't get wet and run.
Part of being an artist is experimentation.
If you wanted to paint watercolor on a mirror there is nothing wrong with that. It's all about learning. I have painted watercolors on both canvas and masonite board. They turned out nicely.
To seal them I used Golden Archival Varnish Mineral Spirit Acrylic Aerosol with UVLS in gloss finish. My paintings were done with iridescent watercolors and any other finish than gloss would have dulled the iridescence.
Make sure the mirror is laying flat on spread out newspaper to collect the over spray. If it's not laying flat, the paint could run.
When you first begin spraying, hold the can about 12 inches from the mirror. Start spraying off the side of the mirror and move across the mirror and stopping off the other side of the mirror. You want to spray with a side to side motion.
You do not want to start spraying on the mirror.
You will want to do several light coats rather than one or two heavy coats, heavy coats will make the paint run. You will want to make the first coat very light, just to hold the paint in place. Then you can add more coats to seal it. It dries pretty quickly and you will want to let it dry between coats so the paint doesn't run.
There is no guarantee that this will work. But people also paint watercolor on Yupo paper. Yupo is a synthetic paper that the watercolor just sits on top of. If the paint was rewet on Yupo it would just run off.
Just remember to have fun with your art. Never listen to people who tell you what you can and can't do with your art. Art is self expression. We learn by doing. Just because someone else (even if that someone else is a long time professional in the business) says that is not how it is 'supposed' to be done, you can do your art however you want - it's yours.
