Permanent White Paint
Does the term "adaptation" only refer to characteristics that are heritable?
For example, a darker coated organism walking under a construction site gets covered with permanent white paint. If white coat colour happens to constitute as an advantage to organisms, can this be called an adaptation, even if the white trait won't be passed on?
Not the act of becoming coloured itself. If, however, a darker organism is smart enough to recognise that making itself lighter is an advantage, and seeks out construction sites, then this intelligence is, in fact, inheritable. It could well be that the ability to learn to seek out construction sites is inheritable and may spread with future generations. This is the basis of what we call instinct in animals.
