How do I finish my kitchen cabinets in antique white with the wood grain showing through?
I have seen light wood cabinets finished in antique white that looks like a paint, but also shows through significant amounts of wood grain like a stain. The finish is smooth and not a rough wood grain look. How do I achieve this look with unfinished wood cabinets? They'll be a light wood like white pine, but it's still possible to change the wood type if its required. Any comments will be appreciated. Book suggestions will be welcomed if they are detailed. Thank you.
Thank you for all the input. What type of paint should I use? Latex? Enamel? Snake-Oil?
Wait did I just say Snake-Oil?
I'm completely renovating my kitchen, as I said earlier, I'll be using new unfinished cabinets.
Sounds like a white wash kind of painting job. You brush on the white paint, then immediately wipe it off with a dry sponge or piece of cloth.
When you wipe it off, do it in one direction - the direction of the grain.
Or else, water down the white paint so that when you brush it on, it still shows the wood grain under it.
If I were you, I'd get a sample of the wood you're using, and experiment on it a little. I'm not sure what white pine looks like, but choose a wood that has a nice looking grain, since that's what you're going to show off.
In any case, you need to finish off the job with a protective transparent coating. Especially since this wood will be in the kitchen. You need to be able to clean it easily, and you don't want it to absorb cooking odors and grease off greasy fingers.
