Newton Oil Paints

Do oil paints contain lead? Which ones/brands?

I paint with oil colors and have read the box/containers. Some (Daler-Rowney) says "ASTM D 4236 No health labelling required." Another (Winsor-Newton) says that it contains lead. I thought that all brands of oil paints are lead-free, at least in modern times! There is a phone number on the tube which contains lead for health questions. I'll call them, but I also wanted to ask for some other opinions: I have been not-so-careful about getting the paint on my skin and not removing it until after a couple of hours when I'm finished working, thinking that it would not harm me. What do you think? Anybody know much about lead in paint? Should I be concerned?

I've been an oil painter for a long time. I have paint that is in lead tubes and many of my paints contain lead. It isn't a good idea to allow paint to sit on your skin. Lead can be absorbed through the skin and it can also be inhaled or ingested.
Before you sit down to paint, wash your hands and apply a barrier cream or wear surgical gloves if you are prone to getting paint on your hands. Wash your hands after you are done painting. Never keep food or drink near or around your work space. Don't even smoke while painting.
If your paint contains lead, the label will specify the fact. Most paint doesn't contain lead, but lead based paint is still available. Colors containing lead are more vibrant and durable and color fast as opposed to "hues" which many times can be fugitive. Fugitive means that the color can fade or change over time.
